A review of Olga Neuwirth, Lost Highway Suite

When I first walked into the concert room and looked at the instruments on the stage I thought that this was just a regular concert, but obviously I was wrong.
When the concert started, I found that there are sounds coming out from the speakers and I thought that those were like the background music thing which goes along with the performance. But latter I got to known that those sound came from the speakers were actually fed from the six soloists, which are the saxophone, clarinet, trombone, guitar, accordion, and keyboard. Actually, the sounds came from the speakers were reprogrammed which could make sure that the sounds could be performed in the way like a refined system for the spatial projection of sound environments. From my opinion, it was like a surround system which is much more better than the system from movie theaters. Thanks to the system, the concert was performed in the way that it could represent transitions between situations, spaces and environments by managing the sounds. The fascinating part of the concert is that we are actually hearing the sounds that only come from the musicians but in another aspect, we are also not hearing the sounds from the musicians cause the sounds are from the speaker but not the stage.
The concert wasn’t like normal concert that just want to present a music piece, but it is intended to present a “movie” in the way of music. At the beginning of the concert, there was the words “NO EXIT” came from the speakers and after that the music started.
During the whole concert, I found that the concert was arrange by the way which connect each part of “story” by using the resonance created by the surround system to make a feeling that the scene was changed but not by the way that make the whole concert be cut into several episodes, it make the concert more like a consecutive story.
Some of the musical instruments used were also attracted my attention. Besides the ordinary instruments that would be used in a concert, this show took Electric Bass in use. I didn’t even notice the Bass before the musician who played cello took out the bass. Surprisingly, the performance of bass is amazing, it added power and strength to the show, which created a magnificent feeling when the bass was played. However, the instrument that attracted me the most is the bottle used by the musician in the back part of the stage. He used the bottle as the musical instrument which could create a low-pitched sound, and in this way, it created a component that was really hard to find in other concerts.
As a conclusion, this concert was based on not only the performance of the musicians on the stage, but also the interaction between the musicians and the surround system in the concert room. The combination of the technique of the musicians and that of the playback system, made the concert a different but amazing one, which introduced me a new level of concert.

  1. I really like your analysis of how the show as a whole really came together right at the interaction of performance and sound system. I agree that it didn't originally start out as an expected piece of music to be heard in that venue, but after the piece started and progressed I felt that there was nothing absurd about the piece and it deserved to be there just as much as any classical piece of music. Despite some of the more non-classical elements, like the screaming and the unique percussion, the piece still maintained a level of high-class through the calculated use of the soloists and ensemble, which I think were the manipulation of the unique solo sounds with the overarching ensemble was the most integral piece of the performance. I definitely agree that the bass guitar added another level of sounds. I feel as if it was so well blended with the more classical sounds that it created a multi-generational bridge with seemingly no effort.

  2. I think you are right, at the very beginning of the performance, I got confused and thought the show was very weird since the sound was scary and made me feel anxious. But when it moved on, I was quite captured by the this nightmare atmosphere. I did not go to any concerts before, so actually I don't know about the other concerts performance and quality. But I think you made a clear point that the great speakers system made the audience in and out into the 'story' scene. I did notice the bottle-play artist, with his performance and the cellist's performance, the two different low-pitch sound merged together and build a good ambiance. Another point you mentioned I also wrote in my review is that the electric bass using in this composition, it is a collision between classical and modern music and it made the audience feel the passion they had in the composition.

  3. I like your opinion that the concert is like a movie. In my view, the movie was formed differently in different listener's minds. I would like to hear your movie that formed in your mind throughout the whole concert. In my mind, the movie that was formed was a kind of movie that has a montage style. The various instruments and the atonal sound provided me a lot of possibility. It was easier for me to open my thoughts. The concert brought me to different scenes in a comparable short amount of time, and I pretty enjoy the feeling of traveling through different scenes. You also provided a lot of idea that I didn’t notice before, like the “No Exist” sound in the back ground. Your analysis towards the influence of the EMPAC hall on the concert is also impressive. Overall, I couldn’t agree more that the concert was not merely a normal concert. It provided millions of possibilities for listeners to imagine and stayed in listener’s mind for a long time.

  4. The concert is definitely not like other common concerts. And I think your thoughts about the concert is like a movie is quite right, since I think it tells a story in my own review and the sound effect is really stunning. I think the point that the interaction between musicians and the surrounding system is really great, and your analysis about the concert is cool.
